Chael Sonnen no longer suspended, now eligible to re-apply for his fight license

Chael Sonnen is no longer suspended and is now eligible to re-apply for his fight license.

The former UFC middleweight number one contender was benched by the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) back on May 18 after getting pinched for fabricating testimony in a previous hearing earlier this year stemming from his failed drug test at UFC 117 -- not to mention his felony conviction in Oregon for money laundering.

That suspension is officially over. MMA Fighting has the details:

"He can be removed from the suspension list and he is able to re-apply to any agency or any commission," George Dodd, the Commission's executive officer, told MMAFighting.com on Wednesday. "In California he would have to appear before the Commission before the Commission would license."

"He's back as far as he may be able to get licensed in other states," Dodd said. "Whether he's back is up to each individual organization to license him. I guess if (Sonnen) says he's back [to fighting] he's probably back into training, but I don't know if he's been licensed in any other state."

If Sonnen can somehow manage to keep himself out of trouble and tone down the trash talk, he might stand a chance at getting another shot at UFC stardom. He was originally tapped to coach The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 14 opposite fellow middleweight Michael Bisping until this latest incident, with the winner becoming the new division number one contender.

That void was filled by former Strikeforce middleweight Jason "Mayhem" Miller.

It's important to note that even though Sonnen can begin applying for his license effective immediately, there are no guarantees he'll actually get one. The mouthy ex-Realtor ruffled quite a few feathers during his downward spiral, including those of Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) Executive Director Keith Kizer.

Anyone ready to welcome him back with open arms? Or is the division better off without him?

UFC 131: JDS Says Carwin Hardest Puncher Ever

James Toney vs. Ken Shamrock MMA Fight

First reported by BJPENN.com, MMA heavyweights and former UFC fighters Ken Shamrock and James Toney have agreed to square off in an MMA bout scheduled to take place on September 23 in El Paso, Texas. The complete details of the fight, as well as which organization would be heading its promotion, are soon to be determined when both camps meet together to discuss the particulars of the fight.

Though the bout has not yet taken full form, Toney’s manager Trever Sherman has confirmed the validity of the planned scrap both with BJPENN.com and with MMAFighting, claiming also that his fighter will be more than ready for it:

The takedown is Ken's only chance… I respect Ken as much as I do Randy. He's one of the reasons we have this art. But he can't stand with James. Randy proved that. He didn't stand with him for 10 seconds. No one will make that mistake. I want James to go in with hands down by his waist and dare Ken to punch with him."

This of course marks the second professional MMA fight for the boxing powerhouse “Lights Out” Toney, his debut fight ending in a predictable loss at the hands of UFC legend Randy Couture. At UFC 118 last August, Couture made quick work of Toney as he took him down and out in the very first round of the fight with an arm-triangle choke. Since then, the decorated boxer has primarily concentrated on his boxing, successfully defending his IBA Heavyweight Championship against Damon Reed. Toney won by unanimous decision scoring the bout 100-90.

On the other hand, the once MMA sensation Ken Shamrock, lost his most recent fight against Mike Bourke which took place on November 25, 2010 in Durban, South Africa and was promoted by the King of the Cage organization. Though Shamrock knocked Bourke down with a hard punch, he experienced a leg injury soon after costing him the contest via TKO in the first round as he was unable to carry on.

The 47-year-old known throughout his career for his impressive physique and his brutal heel submissions (which he used as a trademark move as well in his Pro-Wrestling stint), will most likely approach this fight in the most sensible manner of attack; grapple with Toney, drag him down to the floor and force him into an early submission à la Randy Couture.

Yesterday, Amber Rose was spotted CREEPING with A-List actor JAMIE FOXX. Jamie was spotted (see pics below) sneaking into Millions Of Milkshakes - to see Amber Rose.

We also spoke with a MEMBER of Amber's team who tells us that she and JAMIE have been meeting up with each other while she's been in L.A. And that Amber's BF Wiz knows NOTHING about their meetings.

Dang Amber cheating on Wiz . . . how COULD YOU??? Oh wait a sec, ain't that the SAME THING she did to Kanye . . . LOL!!!

FYI kiddies, we can't say FOR CERTAIN that Amber and Jamie are F*CKING - but given Jamie's reputation . .. you FIGURE IT OUT. But we can tell you that the MEET UPS between Amber and Jamie are FACT, not rumor.

"Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum" ratings on Showtime rank second all time

by Dann Stupp on Jun 21, 2011 at 12:05 pm ET
Ratings for this past weekend's "Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum" event, which continued the organization's heavyweight grand prix, scored the second biggest ratings in Strikeforce-Showtime history.

Overall, the June 18 event earned a 1.7 household rating, an average audience of 624,000 viewers, and a peak audience of 719,000 viewers.

The event, which took place at Dallas' American Airlines Center with an Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum headliner, trailed only a February "Strikeforce: Silva vs. Fedor" event, which scored a record 741,000 viewers. Like this past weekend's show, that February event also featured two opening-round matchups from the eight-man heavyweight tournament.

In addition to Overeem, Josh Barnett advanced in the tournament by submitting Brett Rogers this past weekend. They now join Antonio Silva and Sergei Kharitonov, who won back in February, in the tournament's semifinals this fall.

Four of the top-five Strikeforce-Showtime ratings figures now have been registered in 2011.

The five top-rated Strikeforce-Showtime shows, as compiled by MMAjunkie.com, include:
"Strikeforce: Silva vs. Fedor" (February 2011): 741,000 viewers
"Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum" (June 2011): 624,000
"Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg" (August 2009): 576,000
"Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Cyborg" (January 2011): 561,000
"Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley" (April 2011): 528,000

R.Kelly Broke?

The manager -- Jeff Kwatinetz -- filed a lawsuit against Kelly today in L.A. County Superior Court ... claiming he single-handedly resurrected R. Kelly's career back in 2008 ... when the singer was drowning in child pornography charges.

Jeff claims he "guided Kelly through the recording of two new albums, substantial multi-million dollar tours ... a book deal, and a myriad of other appearances and events" -- and "Kelly reaped millions of dollars" while under his management.

But according to Jeff, Kelly left him in the lurch -- and "has failed and refused to pay" the 15% commission rate they allegedly agreed on.

According to the lawsuit, Kelly's business manager regularly told Jeff he couldn't be paid "because the monies were needed for payments to avoid lawsuits and adverse publicity resulting from Kelly's alleged [sexual misconduct]."

Now, Jeff wants Kelly to pony up at least $1 million in unpaid commissions and punitive damages.

A spokesperson for Kelly is calling B.S. on the lawsuit -- telling TMZ, "Jeff Kwatinetz's complaint is a collection of half-truths, distortions, and outright fabrications."

The rep adds, "Mr. Kwatinetz is a disgruntled former manager who apparently feels the need to try to seek retribution for his discharge. It is particularly disturbing, given his job as a professional talent manager and trusted adviser, that he would feel the need to lash out and dish what he thinks is dirt against a former client."

"When the actual facts are presented, however, we are confident that his allegations will be found to be completely without merit."

UFC 131: Shane Carwin 2.0, Back and Feeling Better Than Ever

Posted on June 6, 2011 by Ken Pishna

Shane Carwin at UFC 116
It will have been nearly a year out of action when Shane Carwin steps foot back in the Octagon at UFC 131 in Vancouver on Saturday night. Originally slated to fight a UFC newcomer, he is instead propelled into the main event to square off with number one heavyweight contender Junior dos Santos.

Carwin stepped in to face dos Santos when Brock Lesnar had to withdraw from the fight due to another bout with diverticulitis that required surgery.

It’s a big shift on just a couple weeks of notice, but a challenge that Carwin is happy to undertake. In fact, despite the magnitude of the fight, training for the fight didn’t undergo dramatic changes.

“The camp has stayed the same, it’s just the strategy has probably changed a little bit,” he told MMAWeekly.com in an exclusive one-on-one interview little more than a week before fight time.

A victory slots Carwin right back into the title picture with a shot against current UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez, who should return to fighting sometime this fall.

Carwin was originally slated to return much sooner than this, but recurring issues with his back and neck finally nudged him into corrective surgery. That coupled with a new diet and training regimen left Carwin much lighter than he was before, something that he’s excited about.

“It’s done wonders for me,” he reflected, particularly pointing to his mostly organic diet. “Honestly, it was probably the best thing that’s happened to me; it’s a lifelong change too.”

Carwin says the strength is there, the explosiveness has ramped up, and he’s ready to step in the Octagon with Junior dos Santos at Rogers Arena on Saturday night.

Anthony Johnson Injured; Rick Story Steps Up to Face Nate Marquardt at ‘UFC on Versus 4′

Anthony Johnson was slated to welcome Nate Marquardt to the welterweight division at this month’s UFC Live event (June 26th in Pittsburgh), but due to a rotator cuff injury suffered in training, ‘Rumble’ won’t be able to make that date. Coming in on short-notice against Marquardt will be rising welterweight star Rick Story, who was in action just last weekend at UFC 130, picking up his sixth-consecutive win against Thiago Alves.

It’s a gamble for Story, but taking out a longtime middleweight contender like Marquardt would earn the Washington native even more respect in the crowded contender pool at 170. Will Story be able to use his wrestling to stifle Marquardt in the same way that Chael Sonnen did at UFC 109, or is Nate going to put the welterweight division on notice, starting with Rick?

The current lineup of UFC Live: Marquardt vs. Story (aka ‘UFC on Versus 4′) is after the jump…

Bob Reilly Confident Voting On MMA Legislation Won’t Happen This Year in New York

In spite of the passing of a Senate bill last month to lift New York ban of mixed martial arts, the state’s biggest douchebag most vocal opponent Bob Reilly says he’s pretty sure that an Assembly vote on the matter won’t happen until at least 2012.

The bill, which was approved by a 48-12 margin last month by the lower tier of government is expected to pass it’s next vote June 7, pushing it on to state Assembly voting. If it passes another vote after that, the sport could be legalized following a mandatory 90-day waiting period, however that’s a big if, considering it sounds like Reilly is planning on dragging out the process into next year.

Here’s what the old curmudgeon told The Business Review recently:

“It’s a dead issue for this session. There’s less than 10 days of session left, and I don’t think it’s sufficient time to vet this subject as needed.”

The current Assembly session ends June 20, which considering the issue was already brought to the table last year and all of the written materials from the senate presentations are readily available, shouldn’t take more than a few days, but Reilly apparently need more time to prepare his uneducated case against the sport.

It’s unclear whether or not the majority of Reilly’s fellow Democrat members of the Assembly (who outweigh the Republican side by a 99-51 margin) will back his anti-MMA platform.

The bill’s sponsor, Democrat Assemblyman Steve Englebright who chairs the committee on tourism, arts and sports development – the group that will be casting the initial sub-committee vote next week - says it could go either way.

“There is a healthy controversy. There are very concerned members of the majority who can’t support it this year, as they could not support it in years past. I imagine we’ll have similar blockage or stoppage,” Englebright says. “But, you never know. There are quite a few new faces in the chamber this year. I haven’t seen a sea [of] change, but I have seen subtle changes.”

Hopefully they’re subtle enough to beat Reilly’s personal vendetta against MMA.

Coming Soon!

Venue finalized for PRIDE-rules Colosseo Championship Fighting 6

An MMA event featuring the return of PRIDE rules will take place a moderate drive from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, as promised.

"Colosseo Championship Fighting 6: Bushido" is set for July 23 at Sangudo Arena in Sangudo, Alberta, and its main card airs on pay-per-view via Ustream.tv. Preliminary-card bouts stream for free on the streaming video-streaming site.

A heavyweight bout pitting ex-UFC and PRIDE veteran Gilbert Yvel against former two-division King of the Cage champion Tony Lopez headlines the show.

An MMA celebrity poker tournament is planned in conjunction with the event and takes place at the nearby Eagle Creek Casino in Whitecourt, Alberta.

Also featured on the card are notables such as Antonio McKee, Shane Nelson, Ross Ebanez and Fabio Nascimento. McKee meets CCF champion Jorge Brito in a lightweight title match.

Colosseo Championship Fighting 6 will be sanctioned by the International Combative Sports Association, a commission not affiliated with the widely recognized Association of Boxing Commissions, which endorses the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts.

The "international rules" include a 10-minute opening round, which is followed by a five-minute second round. Championship fights add a third five-minute round. Soccer kicks, stomps and knees to the head of a downed opponent are allowed, though elbows to the head are not.

Colosseo Championship Fighting's weight classes also resemble those utilized by the now-defunct PRIDE promotion, with heavyweights registering more than 205 pounds, middleweights capping out at 205 pounds, welterweights limited to 181 pounds, lightweight set at 161 pounds and featherweights at 141 pounds.

Former PRIDE referee Yuji Shimada will oversee the evening's main card.

Tickets are available at the Eagle Creek Casino or at the Sangudo Arena on the day of the event. (Pricing information is currently not available.)

Will Smith is not dead; just latest celebrity death hoax victim

Save those "Fresh Prince of No Air" jokes for another day. Turns out Will Smith is alive and breathing despite a profusion of Twitter posts reporting the actor had fallen to his death from a cliff in New Zealand.

The faux news was, according to the Village Voice, first hatched by the site Fakeawish.com -- which is (yes, this exists) a fake news generator. Visitors to the site merely enter a celebrity's first and last name and the site regurgitates a list of fake headlines one can spread to Twitter and Facebook like so many germs. Not only that, but the site generates a somewhat legit-looking article from "Global Associated News" that details the demise of your chosen celeb....
